Through the lens of "Building Science", this course introduces students to energy use and conservation in buildings, providing them with knowledge and skills essential to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and the climate changes they cause. To achieve occupant safety, health and comfort, buildings use energy in a variety of systems including Heating, Ventilation, Cooling, and Lighting. In addition to exploring how energy efficiency in these end uses can be improved, students will learn how the type, source, and transport of energy also influences carbon dioxide emissions. Intended for newcomers to the building performance industries, the course will emphasize plain-language descriptions of energy-using systems and components—their names, functions, and general opportunities for performance improvements.
